How many naps should your child be taking?

As a first time mom, I had no idea how much sleep my baby needed. I was always told never to wake up a sleeping baby, so I let him sleep as much as he could throughout the day. I knew that baby sleep patterns changed as they got older, but I wish I knew then what I know now. Did you know that too much day sleep could cause a baby to wake up frequently throughout the night OR cause an early morning wake up? Well, I didn’t either until I hired a sleep consultant and sleep trained my baby and was told how much sleep he needed. I am providing you with valuable information; please take my advice as it took me 8 months to figure it out. Below is a summary of the number of naps your baby should be taking based on their age:

1/2 month old – 4 +
3 month old – 4 naps
4 month old – 3-4 naps
5 month old – 3 naps
6/7/8 month old – 2-3 naps
9/10 month old – 2 naps
11 month old – 1-2 naps
12-18 month old – 1-2 naps
18 month old or older – 1 nap
22 month old – 3 year old – naps start to disappear (sad, but true!)

If you are not sure how to get your baby or toddler to take their required naps, please don’t hesitate to contact me for a free consultation. The difference naps make on night sleep and sleep in general is amazing.
