Promoting and supporting healthy sleep habits is extremely important to me. If you know me, you know I am passionate about helping others and I thank you for coming along on this journey with me and trusting me through the process.

I am so proud of this little guy who went from 20-30 minute naps to naps lasting 1-2 hours in length!

He was waking every 1 -2 hours at night, however, when we started encouraging independent sleep, he started sleeping throughout the night independently in his crib.

He was very dependent on feeding to sleep at each night waking and laying next to someone until he was in deep sleep, which were two habits that the parents wanted to break.

We achieved these goals in just a few short days with support and consistency and assessing baby's sleep patterns and sleep needs.

It can be extremely challenging when your little one is sick with an illness. Whether they were a good sleeper or not, the changes in their pattern of sleep is common.

Even with the most preventable and prudent measures we take to prevent our children from getting sick, it can be hard to avoid.

Sleep is one of the best medicines for fighting off infection. “Major restorative functions in the body such as tissue repair, muscle growth, and protein synthesis occur almost exclusively during sleep.”

Below are some tips that can help your child sleep better when fighting an illness:

Warm bath/Steam Bath – Helps with congestion and soothing your child

Humidifier – Helps with congestion and opening your child’s airways

Massage – Offers comfort and can help your child feel calm and relaxed

Sleep – Allow your child to sleep in a little bit longer in the morning and offer a longer nap if needed

Comfort – Nervous to leave your child alone at bedtime? Consider staying in their room on a mattress vs bringing them to your bed.

Fluids – Your child may want to bottle-feed or nurse throughout the night, especially if they are not eating well in the day. Offering extra night feeds temporarily can help, however, offer more fluids throughout the day as well to keep them hydrated.

If your child is having a difficult time falling asleep, extra comfort is okay (rocking, extra cuddles, etc.)

If your little one is feeling better and in good spirits, you may be wondering how to get them back on track after an illness?

Go back to your original plan of offering a consistent and predictable routine. Watch wake windows and ensure your child is not overtired.

It is easy for your child to get into the habit of craving the same comfort you offered when they were sick with an illness, but stay as consistent as you can.

Slowly wean them off of the extra night feeds you are offering them and encourage independent sleep if you were rocking or holding them to sleep, especially if these are some of the things you want to break.

Limiting day sleep and putting them to sleep at a regular time at bedtime is also crucial.

Before you know it, they will be back on track!
